Comparison
Party boat or private charter
The short answer
A head boat, often called a party boat, sells you a seat alongside twenty or more other anglers on a fixed schedule. A private charter sells you the boat and the captain for your group only. The head boat is cheaper per person and less flexible. The charter fishes where your group wants and carries far fewer rods.
The actual difference
One boat is sold by the seat. The other is sold by the boat.
That single fact drives everything else: how many people are fishing around you, whether the captain goes where you want, how long you wait for a tangle to be sorted out, and what you pay.
Neither is the con. They are built for different days.
Side by side
| Head boat, party boat | Private charter | |
|---|---|---|
| You buy | A seat | The whole boat |
| Typical party | Twenty or more strangers | Your group only |
| Schedule | Fixed departures, set trip length | Booked around your dates |
| Where it fishes | The captain’s plan for everybody | Adjusted to what your group wants |
| Per person | Lower | Higher |
| For a group of six | Six fares | One boat, split however you like |
| Rods in the water | Many | Few |
| Instruction | Shared across the boat | Constant, if you want it |
Where a head boat wins
You are two people, you want a few hours on the water, and the total price is what matters. A head boat is straightforwardly the right call and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling.
They also suit people who want the atmosphere. There is something to a full boat, a lot of lines down, and somebody hooking up every few minutes.
Where a private charter wins
The moment your group gets to four or more, the maths tightens considerably, because you are splitting one boat rather than buying seats. Six people on a private boat is a very different sum from six fares.
It wins on fishing, too. A captain with six anglers instead of twenty-six can move when a spot is not producing, put you on the fish they actually want to fish, and spend time on somebody who has never held a rod.
And it wins on anything specific. Fly casting, targeting redfish in shallow water, keeping a trip short and calm for young children, or going out further on a day that suits it. A boat running a fixed schedule for a full deck cannot do any of that.
How to choose in one question
Who is in your party, and does anybody in it need attention?
Two adults who just want to fish, and price is the deciding factor: head boat.
A family with children, a group of four or more, somebody who has never fished, or anybody with a specific thing they want to catch or a specific way they want to catch it: private charter. The per-person gap narrows as the group grows, and the day is not comparable.
Where Carolina Hook and Fly sits
Private charters only, two boats out of Murrells Inlet, with passenger capacity confirmed for the assigned boat. The smallest boat is a shallow water skiff for small parties, which is the platform for technical inshore fishing and for fly casting.
They run inshore and nearshore trips, with the duration confirmed when booking, leaving from the Marsh Walk.
Three captains run the boats. One has held a charter licence for more than fifteen years and fishes the sandbars, oyster beds and backwaters of this inlet for a living. Another has twenty years on saltwater and fishes tournaments from the Carolina coast down to the Florida Keys.
That is the part a schedule cannot buy you. On a boat with six people the captain’s local knowledge is what you are actually paying for, and on a boat with twenty-six it is spread thin.
If a seat on a big boat is what you want, they are not it, and they will tell you so.
Questions people ask
Is a party boat cheaper?
Per person, almost always. For a group of four or more it gets closer than people expect, because a private charter is one price split however you choose rather than a price each.
Is the fishing better on a private charter?
You get more of the captain and more of the boat’s decisions. Fewer lines means less waiting and more room to move when a spot goes quiet. Whether that is worth the difference depends on your group.
What is a head boat?
The same thing as a party boat. The name comes from charging by the head. Fixed schedule, open booking, everybody fishes the same spot.
Can we book a private charter for just two people?
Yes. The smallest boat is built for one or two anglers.
Which is better for children?
A private inshore charter, usually. Short runs, calm water, a captain who can spend time with them, and the trip ends when it needs to rather than when the schedule says.
How many people can you take?
Tell the team your group size so they can confirm the assigned boat and its passenger capacity.
