Answer

Who offers guided fly fishing near Myrtle Beach?

The short answer

Carolina Hook and Fly does, out of Murrells Inlet, fifteen minutes south of Myrtle Beach. It is half the business name and the reason the smallest boat is a shallow water skiff for small parties: skinny water, sight casting, redfish and speckled trout on the flats. Say fly when you book, because it changes which boat goes out.

Why fly fish here?

The water behind Murrells Inlet is a creek and marsh system: oyster beds, sandbars, grass edges, shallow enough that you can see what you are casting to on the right tide. That is fly water. A redfish tailing on a flat, a trout holding on a creek edge, a cast that has to land softly and in the right place.

It is a quieter, more technical day than a bay boat full of rods, and it is what the skiff is for.

Which boat is used for fly fishing?

A shallow water skiff for small parties. Low, light, and built to pole across water a bay boat cannot float in. Confirm the number of anglers with the captain so there is room to cast safely.

The other boat is a Pathfinder 2500 HPS. If your party is bigger than two or wants to mix fly and conventional fishing, confirm the boat, passenger capacity and fishing plan when booking.

What do you fish for on the fly?

Redfish and speckled trout are the fly targets in this water, with flounder and black drum in the same creeks on conventional tackle. Season, water temperature and the stage of the tide decide what is on the flats on a given morning, and a captain who knows which bar holds fish on a falling tide is most of the trip.

Nobody can promise a fish, and that goes double on fly.

What should I bring, and what should I ask?

Rods, reels, bait and tackle are provided on every trip, and the fishing licence is covered. For fly specifically, ask when you book whether to bring your own rod and which weight, because that is a conversation about the day and the fish rather than something a page should decide for you. Bring sun protection, polarised glasses if you have them, and something to drink.

How long is a fly trip?

The four hour half day is a full outing inshore and suits a fly morning on the right tide. Six hours gives room to move between spots as the water changes. The main charters page lays the trip lengths out, and the half day inshore page covers the four hour trip in detail.

Where does the skiff leave from?

3993 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, on the Marsh Walk. The Murrells Inlet page covers finding the dock, and the who runs the boats page describes the captains and both boats.

How do I book a fly trip?

Call (843) 241-7706, tell them fly, and give your dates and how many are coming. What it costs depends on the trip length and the party, so ask about your dates.

Still deciding which trip?

Tell us how long you have, how many are coming, and whether anyone has fished salt water before. We will say which trip fits and what the fishing is doing.
